Action Alert: Water Efficiency Measures Under Attack NOW
Contact your state senator a.s.a.p. and ask them to vote "NO" on HB1281
In the next few hours the Georgia State Senate will vote on HB 1281- a bill which would prohibit cities and counties from applying water restrictions that are more stringent than those required by the state without first getting approval from the Georgia Environmental Protection Division. Not only does Georgia EPD not have the staff necessary to deal with such requests, but this legislation would unnecessarily inject politics into decisions and take away an important tool for our local governments to use in safeguarding our water supplies.
Please contact your senator now and ask them to oppose HB 1281 and efforts to hamper the ability of local governments to react quickly to successfully reduce water use in reaction to drought conditions in their area. Click here to learn more and see a sample message about the bill. You can find your state senator's name and contact information at www.congress.org.
Help Cleanup Lake Lanier’s Shoreline on April 12
Even with the recent rains, there are still years of trash exposed by the low water levels at Lake Lanier - cans, bottles, and untold treasure. Join UCR in cleaning up the lake on Saturday, April 12, from 9 am – 12 pm at Lake Lanier Islands. To participate contact Tammy Morrissey at tmorrissey@ucriverkeeper.org or (404) 352-9828 ext. 12 for specific information on location and directions.
Bags will be provided. Dress to get dirty and sink in the mud—warm clothing, thick leather boots and thick rubber or leather gloves recommended. Children are welcome but must be supervised closely, and all participants must sign a waiver.
Also, if you have not yet registered to be a 2008 UCR Volunteer, click here to sign up and receive email alerts about cleanups and other volunteer opportunities.
