Permit Review and Comment
UCR monitors permit compliance by municipalities and industries who are allowed, pursuant to the federal Clean Water Act, to discharge treated wastewater into the river. When necessary, we take legal action to ensure that sewage plants meet all requirements for bacteria removal and that industries meet standards for toxic substances. We also review, and comment on, all proposals for new and modified permits of treated waste into the watershed. Our goal is for all waters in the Chattahoochee River Basin to be fishable and swimmable.

The goal of our lawsuit against the city of Atlanta was to force the city to clean up its waterways, so that they are safe for the adults and children who live near them and for downstream communities. More recently, we worked with the state Environmental Protection Division to force the city of East Point to sign a legal agreement to fix their sewer system which has dumped raw sewage into neighborhood streams for decades.
