Fish Consumption Guidelines
UCR surveyed fish consumption by anglers in the Chattahoochee over a 3-year period and concluded that minority populations are 2.4 times as likely to consume fish that are contaminated with mercury and PCBs, as white populations. These anglers are either choosing to ignore the state’s fish consumption guidelines [PDF], or are unaware that these guidelines exist. Working with state EPD Toxicologist, Dr. Randy Manning, UCR staff helped the state public health agency (DNR) distribute outreach materials to at risk populations in both English and in Spanish.
